As environmental concerns intensify, the need for sustainable solutions has never been more pressing. Amidst the promising alternatives, biodegradable grass straws have emerged as a frontrunner, offering a viable replacement for conventional plastic straws. Not only are grass straws environmentally friendly, but they also provide a range of benefits to users. In this article, we embark on a journey into the fascinating world of grass straws, exploring their unique qualities and advantages.
What are grass straws?
Straws made from Lepironia Articulata, a plant commonly found in the southwestern provinces of Vietnam such as Long An, Ha Tien, and Dong Thap,... This is a product manufactured from the stems of the stem sedge plants which are naturally hollow and flexible. After being harvested, they undergo preliminary processing, cleaning, drying, and sterilization to become Lepironia straws - Grass straws

There are two most common types of grass straws:
Fresh grass straw: produced from the stem of fresh Lepironia grass, has the natural green color of fresh grass, flexibility and has a slight fragrance of grass. This type of straw has a short shelf life, only 1-2 days and must be carefully stored in a humid place, helping the straw to be fresh and not damaged.
Dried grass straws: produced from dried grass stems, which are green, light yellow, more durable and can be used for a longer time. The ideal use time is from 6-12 months.
How are grass straws made?
Grass harvesting process
Grass often grows naturally in wetlands, along rivers, and lakes. The process of harvesting grass includes the following steps:
Choosing a location: Farmers will choose areas with well-grown grass, ensuring the quality of raw materials, plants with a height of 1-1.5m into 2m, with a diameter of 8-10mm
Harvesting: The grass is cut by hand, taking care not to damage the roots so that the grass can continue to grow and not affect other plants.
Transportation: After harvesting, the grass will be transported to the processing factory to produce straws.

Grass Straw Manufacturing Process
After the grass is harvested, the process of producing grass straws will take place as follows:
Washing the grass: The grass will be washed to remove dirt and impurities.
Cutting and shaping: The grass will be selected with standard pipes and pipe positions to be cut into sections with appropriate length and cleared of embryos, washed off the tube afterwards.
Sunning Exposure: The tube after being preliminarily processed will be dried in the sun

Drying, UV irradiation: Straw will be selected again to meet the standards for drying and killing bacteria, to remove moisture, helping to increase the durability of straws. Then the grass tube is irradiated with UV light to kill bacteria and resist mold again.
Packing: Finally, the grass straws will be packed and put on the market.

What are the benefits of using grass straws?
Grass straws have many outstanding properties, including:
Biodegradable: After use, grass straws can completely decompose in the natural environment without harming the ecosystem because straws are made from 100% natural grass
Safe for health: Free of harmful chemicals such as BPA or phthalates, grass straws are completely 100% safe for users.
High Durability: Although made from natural materials, grass straws still have good durability, which can be used for a variety of drinks at different temperatures
Why should you use grass straws instead of plastic straws?
Environmentally Friendly
One of the biggest benefits of grass straws is their environmental friendliness. When you use grass straws, you are contributing to reducing plastic waste, protecting ecosystems and wildlife.
